ENNIS KANA TRAVOLD MANN: "I AM NOW A WNBA ELIGIBLE" - FORMER NBA STAR CLAIMS RIGHT TO PARTICIPATE.
The controversy began when Indianapolis Fever player Sophie Cunningham expressed concern about young girls competing against biological males. Her comments triggered protests and renewed the debate over transgender eligibility in sports.
Former NBA star Ennis Kanatravoldeman announced his candidacy for the WNBA draft, stating he qualifies under existing rules or their absence: 'I formally declare myself a candidate.' The story continues from Sophie Cunningham's remarks last season at Indiana Fever regarding protecting young girls. This sparked protests on both sides and brought transgender women in sports to public attention.
During an ESPN interview about protecting the women's program, Cunningham said she receives criticism for hating trans people but denies it, stating her love includes truth. She believes that within a locker room or sporting arena, there should not be biological male athletes against young girls. She added that banning transgender athletes from female categories is 'commonsense.'
Her comments sparked political debate across America. President Trump supported Cunningham; Vice JD Vance called her heartwarming. The 29-year-old player later said she was a less political person, but continued to face attention in the US during Indiana games and protests organized by critics and supporters.
Media and online debates were impressive in scale as the WNBA has no public out transgender female players participating yet, nor any prior participation recorded. Sophie Cunningham is on her 8th WNBA season.
The league operates under Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) covering salary caps, revenue sharing, welfare, operations. CBA states: 'Only women are eligible for WNBA.' Since Cunningham's comments, the league hasn't publicly commented but reportedly Commissioner Casey Engelbe wrote to teams that this issue will be discussed at upcoming meetings. She said we will handle it with careful thought, respect, and long-term values.
She added our player eligibility rules differ from other leagues via collective bargaining. Maintaining integrity is priority number one. However, the league lacks detailed standards which Kanatravoldeman revealed to light: 'If claiming identity satisfies requirements then I meet all necessary conditions.' He previously criticized human rights in China and Turkey saying he knew his presence would spark opinion but clarified not there to mock or disrespect.
One day after announcement Royce White also declared candidacy. After three NBA seasons currently a Republican congress candidate said sometimes considers himself female for basketball participation.
It remains unclear whether rule ambiguity was intentional leave or management oversight needing strengthening. BBC Sports contacted Cunningham reps, WNBA and WNBPA seeking comment.
Demonstrators at earlier August protested before Minnesota Lynx vs Indiana Fever games.
Cunningham comments became a spark in league; historically focused on race gender equality LGBTQ rights activism. When responding to controversy player association didn't mention her name but issued statement condemning attacks against trans community reiterating commitment to justice diversity inclusivity urging fans report bad behavior saying difficult dialogue will continue without being political pawns.
Both sides have strong positions
Minnesota Lynx head coach president Shirley Ripley said 'I come from a space.' She thinks problematic narrative implies transgender athletes are biggest problem. Calif Valley team forward Gabby Williams welcome trans players regardless own or opposing teams.
Earlier last month WNBA co owner Celeste Keaton suspended for five home games after scolding fans holding signs thanking Cunningham for voicing for girls Lynx apologized recently.
Cunningham's comments becoming unpleasant disruption while defending original comment she said wish to return basketball matter always surround court stating league competition standards obscured by offcourt issues but as pressure grows over eligibility clarification may be difficult.
Recent years many sports bodies revised rules restricting trans participation at elite levels. Athletics cycling aquatic events imposed bans on female athletes for transgender women March Olympics categories limited biological females in 2028 Los Angeles Games IOC stated qualification determined one-time gender test preventing female trans or intersexed (DSD) experienced male puberty participants.
US Trans girls banned from campus university elementary participation of female sports. This part executive order signed President Trump last year named men unable enter women sports projects not covering professional sport
